Proudly Presents
Variety
NOVEMBER
2011 NEWSLETTER
Holiday
time is fast approaching and the sound of busy shoppers is increasing as those
early Christmas bargains are being snapped up.
THIS
WILL BE OUR LAST NEWSLETTER FOR 2011. I
have included dates for our regular meetings in February 2012 but no doubt our
event list will grow by the time January’s newsletter is published.
Keep your ears open in the meantime as updates will be announced on club
days.
Club
Day – 23rd October
A
good crowd turned out even considering the day coincided with Labour Weekend.
I found out later, after having returned from Taranaki, that Roy Lewin
had decided that day to do an item. Now
Roy is an elderly gentleman who religiously walks to the hall, accompanied by
Roka, to enjoy a day’s entertainment. It
just goes to show, you are never too old to strut your stuff.
30th
October –Whangarei CMC afternoon at the RSA
This
was another enjoyable afternoon coupled with a great turnout.
Guest Artists Sean Ryland and his two daughters Reba and Taylor
(performing as “Double Trouble”) did a commendable performance.
5th
November – Variety
Concert
This
proved to be a very successful evening and we had a lot of positive feedback
about out skits. I’m not sure
whether Colin is “Colin” or “Henry”, but he still has a hole in his
bucket. On all accounts I hear that the Beverley Hillbillies are
still hanging out in Beverley Hills and the swagman, well, who knows where he
hangs out these days.
Our
thanks go out to everyone who contributed in some way on the night with a
special thanks to Brent for raising his hand to do the compering, Bert for
leading the Hillbillies skit and Sue for filling in with her banjo solo, JK as
Stage Manager and for helping with the setting up the hall, the ladies in the
kitchen who excelled themselves with organising the meal and supper, and the
many other helpers on the night (you know who you are). Over $1,200.00 was
raised for the club so that will go a long way towards our travel costs next
year.
Our
guest artists, Mike Hustable and Prue Martin, really excelled themselves and had
the place rockin’ with their prominent captivating performance.
Thanks for your input you two.
6th
November – Northern Wairoa Regional Concert
Those
of our members who made the trip over to Dargaville and those who were lucky
enough to have been chosen to sing, came away saying there was a good array of
entertainment and a great spread for afternoon tea. Thanks to the Dargaville Club for hosting this event once
again.
Club
Day – 13th November (Theme: Rock ‘n Roll) with Hibiscus Coast as
our special visiting club for the day.
Thanks
to our visitors for venturing north, it was wonderful to catch up with you folk
again. With the 40+ visitors,
combined with our lot, we actually ended up with 120 people on the day.
A few folk remembered our theme and dressed up for the occasion. Even
some of our visitors came to light with an early ‘rock’ song which was
great. Everyone sang well and
really got into the spirit on the day.
We
are planning a return visit to the Hibiscus Coast Club next year.
Keep an eye on the events calendar and put your pennies aside.
Christmas
Breakup – 17th December
Remember
our Christmas windup is on the 17th December, under a month away.
We would appreciate any Christmas goodies to add to our hamper.
Please leave your items with Dot or Barbara.
If
you want to sing on the day (Christmas song optional) then put your names down
as you come in the door on the club days leading up to the 17th, i.e.
today and 10th December.
The
programme: 4pm
start - club singers
6pm – dinner (pot luck)
7pm – club singers
8pm – Music and dancing with Jim Foote on keyboard
Pot Luck Dinner
We
would appreciate it if everyone could contribute with either a salad or sweet
for pudding. The club will be
supplying the meats.
Cushions
Part
of the hall equipment now includes cushions, to make your visit on club days
more comfortable. Just ask the MC
on the day if you require a cushion, but please ensure they are returned before
you leave the hall.
SPECIAL
EVENT SUGGESTIONS
We
are reaching the end of the year and the opportunity for you to make suggestions
regarding special events which we are planning to hold next year.
Please, if you haven’t already made a suggestion, pick up a form from
the front desk. All suggestions will
be considered.

·
Jan Harding, whom you may have noticed did not perform in our concert,
ended up in hospital that week. He
is now recuperating at home.
·
Malcolm has come through all recent tests with flying colours.
He is now waiting for an appointment at the Auckland Hospital for
follow-up radiation treatment.
·
Henry is currently undergoing further tests for reoccurring health
problems. Best of luck with your
results Henry.
Workshops:
Our
workshop evenings (2 per month) run from 6.30pm to 10.00pm on the Saturday
before each club day, unless otherwise advised.
There is a limit of 1 song per
person per workshop with a small cover charge of $1.00 which goes towards
hall hire which is also subsidised by the club.
You may get a second turn only if time allows, in which case your name
will come up in the order of the list. To
give everyone an equal opportunity to have their songs chorded, we ask that you
spend some time, before presenting your song to the band, to familiarise
yourself with the tune.
Spaces
are limited, so if you want to attend the workshops please give your name to Dot at the front desk on club days, or
phone Barbara on 09 4370646. It
is also important to phone Barbara if your name is on the list and you find out
later that you are unable to attend.

ABBY’s
CD
Ray
and I have a few copies left to sell and we both feel that these would
definitely be a good choice for that Christmas prezzie list.
She is already onto her second run of 200 and has been given air play in
Ireland and Canada. Not bad for a 15 year old.
